This National Standard of Canada is equivalent to International Technical Report IEC 1288-1:1993. 1 Scope This technical report contains guidelines regarding the safe and effective operation and maintenance of CARDIAC DEFIBRILLATORS, as defined in clause 3 below, to be performed by medical and nursing personnel. This report does not apply to automatic implantable DEFIBRILLATORS and automatic external DEFIBRILLATORS. The application guidelines in this report deal with the safe operation and maintenance of CARDIAC DEFIBRILLATORS constructed according to the safety requirements of IEC 601-1 and 601-2-4 (see clause 2 below). Not all the existing CARDIAC DEFIBRILLATORS meet the minimum requirements of current international standards, however the guidelines in this report will still be helpful in utilizing these devices.
