Safety of Information Technology Equipment, Including Electrical Business Equipment
1.1 Scope 1.1.1 Equipment covered by this standard This standard is applicable to mains-powered or battery-powered information technology equipment, including electrical business equipment and associated equipment, with a RATED VOLTAGE not exceeding 600 V and designed to be installed in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part 1, CSA C22.1; CSA C22.2 No.0; the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70; and, unless otherwise identified, the Standard for the Protection of Electronic Computer Data-Processing Equipment, NFPA 75. See annex NAE for examples of and references to regulatory requirements that may apply to this equipment. This standard is also applicable to such equipment designed and intended to be connected directly to a TELECOMMUNICATION NETWORK and forming a part of a subscriber's installation, regardless of ownership and of responsibility for installation and maintenance, and regardless of the source of power. This standard specifies requirements intended to ensure safety for the OPERATOr and layman who may come into contact with the equipment and, where specifically stated, for SERVICE PERSONNEL. This standard is intended to ensure the safety of installed equipment, whether it consists of a system of interconnected units or independent units, subject to installing, operating and maintaining the equipment in the manner prescribed by the manufacturer. Examples of equipment which is within the scope of this standard are: accounting machines modems book-keeping machines monetary processing machines calculators motor-operated files cash registers PABXs copying machines paper jogging machines data circuit terminating paper tape readers and punches equipment (e.g. modems) paper trimmers (punches, data preparation equipment cutting machines, separators) data processing equipment pencil sharpeners data terminal equipment personal computers dictation equipment plotters document shredding machines point of sale terminals duplicators postage machines electrically operated drawing staplers machines (plotters) telephone answering machines erasers telephone sets facsimile equipment teleprinters key telephone systems text processing equipment magnetic tape handlers typewriters mail processing machines visual display units micrographic office equipment This list is not intended to be comprehensive, and equipment that is not listed is not necessarily excluded from the scope. Equipment complying with the relevant requirements in this standard is considered suitable for use with process control equipment, automatic test equipment and similar systems requiring information processing facilities. However, this standard does not include requirements for performance or functional characteristics or equipment. 1.1.2 Additional requirements Requirements additional to those specified in this standard may be necessary for: - equipment intended for operation while exposed, for example, to extremes of temperature; to excessive dust, moisture, or vibration; to flammable gases; to corrosive or explosive atmospheres; - electromedical applications with physical connections to the patient; - equipment intended to be used in vehicles, on board ships or aircraft, in tropical countries, or at elevations greater than 2000 m; - equipment subject to transient overvoltages exceeding Overvoltage Category II (also known as Installation Category II) according to IEc 664; additional protection might be necessary in the mains supply to the equipment; - equipment intended for use where ingress of water is possible; for guidance on such requirements and on relevan
