Safety requirements for mains operated electronic and related apparatus for household and similar general use
1. Scope 1.1 This standard applies to the following apparatus that is to be connected to the supply mains, either directly or indirectly, intended for domestic and similar general indoor use and not subject to dripping or splashing: - radio receiving apparatus for sound or vision; - amplifiers; - independent load transducers and source transducers; - motor-driven apparatus which comprise one or more of the above-mentioned apparatus, or can be used only in combination with one or more of them, such as radio-gramophones and tape recorders; - other apparatus obviously provided to be used in combination with the above-mentioned apparatus, such as antenna amplifiers, supply apparatus and cable-connected remote control devices; - battery eliminators. In the absence of an appropriate standard for professional apparatus likely to be operated by laymen, this standard will be used in so far as it is applicable. Supplementary requirements for splash-proof electronic equipment are given in Appendix A, page 137. This Standard applies to the safety of such equipment designed to be installed and used in accordance with the rules of the Canadian Electrical code (CEC), Part I. Note: Manufacturers designing products for use in Canada may find a helpful summary of the equipment-related requirements of the CEC, Part I, in CSA Publication Spe-2000. 1.2 This standard applies to apparatus for use at altitudes up to 2 000 m. For apparatus to be used in tropical climates, different requirements, as mentioned in the relevant clauses, are applicable. 1.3 This standard does not apply to apparatus designed for a rated supply voltage exceeding: - 433 V (r.m.s.) between phases in the case of apparatus for three-phase supply; - 250 V (r.m.s.) in all other cases. 1.4 This standard is concerned with safety only and not with the other properties of the apparatus (see Clause 3). 1.5 This standard applies to apparatus constructed so as to ensure adequate protection against electric shock by the provision of either earthing or special insultion methods.
