Precast Concrete - Materials and Construction
1.1 General This standard covers materials to be used and methods to be followed for the manufacture, transportation, and erection of architectural, structural, and specialty precast concrete products. Notes: (1) Good control over dimension, appearance, and performance of precast concrete products can be obtained when this Standard is used. (2) This Standard should be specified for precast concrete elements used in segmental construction. 1.2 Certification Precast concrete elements produced and erected in accordance with this Standard shall be manufactured in plants certified in the appropriate category by a certification organization accredited by the Standards Council of Canada in the subject area of building products and structures. Note: Plant certification demonstrates the capability of a manufacturer to fabricate precast concrete elements to the requirements of this Standard. 1.3 Design Basis 1.3.1 Structural and architectural precast concrete shall be designed in accordance with CSA Standard A23.3 or S6 as specified by the regulatory authorities. 1.3.2 The design of specialty precast products shall be in accordance with other applicable Standards as specified by the Owner. Notes: (1) Regulatory authorities require that structural design and review of construction be carried out by a professional qualified for such activities under appropriate provincial or territorial legislation. This requirement is intended to ensure the structural adequacy of precast concrete and includes design, shop drawings, manufacture, and installation for which the manufacturer is responsible. The provision of qualified professional services is a requirement of plant certification (Appendix A, Clause A2, Responsibility of the Manufacturer). (2) For information on the design of precast and prestressed concrete, see the Metric Design Manual, 2nd edition, 1987, published by CPCI. 1.3.3 Sandwich wall panels shall be designed as composite or noncomposite. Note: See the metric Design Manual, 2nd edition, 1987, published by CPCI. 1.4 Shop Drawings This Standard outlines the requirements for precast concrete shop drawings in addition to those stated in CSA Standard A23.3. 1.5 Architectural Precast Concrete Those aspects of architectural precast concrete falling within the scope of provincial building codes, namely those affecting its structural adequacy, are included within the body of this Standard. Architectural finishes are covered in Appendix C. Note: Conformity with Appendix C should be required in projects that include the supply of architectural precast concrete. (See "Guide for the Use of the Standard".) 1.6 Precedence Where this Standard states that the content of a clause shall conform to a referenced standard and additional clauses in this Standard, then, where there is a conflict the requirements of this Standard shall take precedence.
