B481 SERIES-12 (R2017)
Preface
This is the second edition of the CSA B481 Series of Standards, Grease interceptors. It supersedes the previous edition published in 2007. It consists of the following Standards:
(a) CSA B481.0, Material, design, and construction requirements for grease interceptors;
(b) CSA B481.1, Testing and rating of grease interceptors using lard;
(c) CSA B481.2, Testing and rating of grease interceptors using oil;
(d) CSA B481.3, Sizing, selection, location, and installation of grease interceptors;
(e) CSA B481.4, Maintenance of grease interceptors; and
(f) CSA B481.5, Testing and rating of grease interceptors equipped with a grease removal device.
Differences from the previous edition of the CSA B481 Series include
(a) changes to the requirements in CSA B481.0;
(b) changes to the requirements in CSA B481.3; and
(c) the addition of CSA B481.5 to the Series.
These Standards are considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of each Standard.
----------------------------------------------------------------
B481.0-12 - Material, design, and construction requirements for grease interceptors
Scope
1.1
This Standard specifies material, design, and construction requirements for manufactured grease interceptors intended to separate and collect organic fats, oils, and greases from water.
1.2
Grease interceptors covered in the CSA B481 Series
are installed in drainage systems to reduce the amount of organic fats, oils, and greases entering the sanitary system;
may be for indoor applications (usually referred to as the under-the-counter type) or for outdoor applications (i.e., underground);
have a flow rating of not less than 26 L/min (7 gpm) and not more than 380 L/min (100 gpm); and
Note: Grease interceptors can operate at any flow rate below their flow rating.
are hydromechanical batch-flow interceptors.
1.3
The CSA B481 Series does not cover interceptors intended for rainwater, sanitary wastewater, or wastewater containing petroleum products such as gasoline, heating oils, or mineral oils.
1.4
In CSA Standards, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and "can" is used to express possibility or capability.
Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.
Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.
Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
1.5
In the CSA B481 Series, the values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. Where values are given in parentheses, they are for information only.
Litres (metric liquid) per minute is abbreviated L/min and gallons (US liquid) per minute is abbreviated gpm. All references to gallons are to US liquid gallons.
----------------------------------------------------------------
B481.1-12 - Testing and rating of grease interceptors using lard
Scope
This Standard specifies performance criteria for the testing and rating of grease interceptors (as defined in CSA B481.0) using lard.
----------------------------------------------------------------
B481.2-12 - Testing and rating of grease interceptors using oil
Scope
This Standard specifies performance criteria for the testing and rating of grease interceptors (as defined in CSA B481.0) using oil.
----------------------------------------------------------------
B481.3-12 - Sizing, selection, location, and installation of grease interceptors
Scope
This Standard specifies sizing, selection, location, and installation requirements for grease interceptors (as defined in CSA B481.0).
----------------------------------------------------------------
B481.4-12 - Maintenance of grease interceptors
Scope
This Standard specifies requirements for the maintenance of grease interceptors manufactured, performance tested and rated, sized, selected, and installed in accordance with the CSA B481 Series.
----------------------------------------------------------------
B481.5-12 - Testing and rating of grease interceptors equipped with a grease removal device
Scope
This Standard specifies performance criteria for the testing and rating of grease interceptors equipped with an automatic grease removal device (GRD). Semi-automatic devices are not addressed in this Standard.
