C22.1HB-06
Object
The object of the Code is to specify requirements for the installation and maintenance of electrical equipment to
help ensure safe electrical installation. The electrical safety of industrial and similar installations is also ensured
through compliance with the objective-based fundamental safety principles of IEC 60364-1 through the
implementation of a quality management program or equivalent program acceptable to the authorities adopting
and enforcing the Code.
In the preparation of the Code, consideration has been given to the following four major areas:
? the prevention of fire hazards;
? the prevention of shock hazards;
? the proper maintenance of electrical installations and electrical equipment; and
? the proper operation of electrical installations and electrical equipment.
The Code recommends that, when considering initial installations, designers and field personnel make
provisions for wiring changes that might be required as a result of future load growth. If future growth is not
taken into consideration, an electrical installation can become overloaded, resulting in a hazardous condition.
Scope
The Code covers all electrical installations for buildings, structures, and premises and is intended to apply to all
voltages. Although low voltages might not pose a shock hazard, various conditions can lead to injury and damage
to equipment, even at seemingly harmless voltage levels.
The Code does not apply to
? installations used by electric, communication, or community antenna distribution system utilities in their
function as utilities, as recognized by the regulatory authority having jurisdiction, including utility installations
located in generating stations, central exchange buildings, buildings used as receiving/transmitting stations,
and administration buildings closed to the public;
? facilities and equipment used in the operation of electric railways that are supplied from the circuit supplying
the motive power;
? electrical installations and equipment used for railway signalling and communications and located outdoors or
in buildings or parts of buildings used only for such electrical installations;
? aircraft of any type;
? self-propelled marine vessels, unless the vessels are stationary for periods longer than five months and are
connected to a shore supply of electricity; and
? ships regulated by Transport Canada.
