CAN/ULC-S603.1-03
1. SCOPE
1.1 These requirements cover external corrosion protection systems on carbon steel
underground storage tanks. The requirements are as follows:
A Part 1 covers external corrosion protection using sacrificial anodes,
electrical isolation and thin film dielectric coating (cathodic protected tank);
B Part 2 covers external corrosion protection using dielectric fibre reinforced
plastics or resins that are bonded to the tank (composite tank);
C Part 3 covers external corrosion protection using dielectric secondary
containment (jacketed tanks); and
D Part 4 covers external corrosion protection using polyurethane (coated
tank).
1.2 These external corrosion protection systems are intended to be installed,
operated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
1.3 These requirements cover external corrosion protection systems for steel tanks
manufactured in accordance with the applicable requirements of ULC-S603, Standard for Steel
Underground Tanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids, which are used for the
underground storage of flammable and combustible liquids such as gasoline, fuel oil, and similar
products.
1.4 In addition to meeting the construction and performance requirements contained
in ULC-S603, Standard for Steel Underground Tanks for Flammable and Combustible Liquids,
construction of corrosion protected steel underground tanks shall comply with the applicable
requirements of this Standard.
1.5 Tanks covered by these requirements are intended for installation and use in
accordance with the requirements outlined in ULC-S603, Standard for Steel Underground Tanks
for Flammable and Combustible Liquids and other documents such as:
A Environmental Code of Practice for Underground Storage Tank Systems
Containing Petroleum Products and Allied Petroleum Products, CCME
EPC-LST-61E;
B The National Fire Code; or
C Other applicable regulations of the authority having jurisdiction.
1.6 Where applicable, each tank with an external corrosion protection system shall be
provided with a corrosion protection repair kit applicable to its technology and the
manufacturer's application instructions.
NOTE: Refer to Appendices A and B for recommended practices.
