Safety of products and materials in contact with drinking water
1 PURPOSE This standard specifies the requirements that products and materials in contact with drinking water shall conform to in order to preserve drinking water quality. This standard considers the incidence of products and materials in contact with drinking water on public health and the aesthetic quality of the water. This standard specifies the methods for evaluation of products and materials in contact with drinking water. 2 SCOPE This standard applies to all types of materials (for example, plastics, other polymers, metal, cement) and products (for example, pipes, gaskets, valves, coating materials, lubricants) in contact with drinking water in a temporary or permanent cold water distribution system. NOTES 1 Fire hydrants fall within the scope because they are major elements of a temporary drinking water supply system. The Specification NQ 1809-300, which is currently being revised, specifies applicable requirements for temporary drinking water supply systems. 2 Even though the requirements of this standard apply exclusively to water supply system, these requirements should also apply to products and materials installed upstream of a water supply system, such as pipes and tanks of a drinking water production unit. This document was developed to serve as a reference document for the conformity assessment of specific products.
