Protectice Coatings for Metals
1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard is intended for use as a guide when preparing specifications and contracts for the protective coating of mild and galvanized steels, copper and aluminum exposed to atmospheric (non-immersion) service conditions. It contains recommendations and procedures for new coating systems which have performed satisfactorily after long-term exposures and repair of failed coating systems. Aerospace applications are not covered in this standard. 1.2 This standard provides: General information on protective coating systems References to definitions and protective coating terms It also provides guidance on: The selection of protective coating systems Surface preparation Protective coating application Inspection Preparation of specifications 1.3 The term "specifier" is frequently used in a general sense and may be understood to include owners, general contractors, architects and engineers. 1.4 The testing and evaluation of a product against this standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous.
