1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard applies to two types¹ of diesel fuel,² SPECIAL and SPECIAL-LS (low sulphur) for use in high- and medium-speed diesel engines in underground mines. 1.1.1 Type SPECIAL fuel is intended for use where quantities of ventilating air are restricted and/or high operating temperatures exist. 1.1.2 Type SPECIAL-LS (a maximum sulfur of 0.05% by mass of the SPECIAL type) is intended for use as specified in par. 1.1.1 and for use in high-speed diesel engines designed to meet the stringent diesel exhaust emissions regulations (as promulgated in the U.S.A. by EPA) for heavy-duty on-highway vehicles and engines. 1.2 The testing and evaluation of a product against this standard may require the use of materials and/or equipment that could be hazardous. This document does not purport to address all the safety aspects associated with its use.
