W48.6-96
1. Scope
1.1
This Standard prescribes requirements for the classification and certification
of fluxes and carbon steel electrodes (both solid and composite) for submerged
arc welding.
1.2
Welding fluxes and electrodes classified in this Standard are intended for
submerged arc welding. This is not intended to preclude their use with any
other process for which they are found suitable.
1.3
Fluxes and electrodes covered by this Standard are classified according to the
(a) chemical composition of the electrode (for solid electrodes) as specified
in Table 1, or the undiluted weld metal produced with a particular flux (for
composite electrodes) as specified in Table 2;
(b) mechanical properties of the weld metal obtained with a particular flux and
a particular classification of solid electrode, or a particular combination of
flux and composite wire, as specified in Table 3; and
(c) condition of heat treatment in which these properties are obtained.
1.4
This Standard does not allow any solid electrode certified under one
classification to be certified under any other classification in this Standard.
Any composite electrode certified in combination with a particular flux shall
not be certified under any other classification in this Standard except that a
composite electrode may be certified under different classifications in
combination with different fluxes. Fluxes may be classified under any number
of classifications, for weld metal in either or both the as-welded and
post-weld heat-treated conditions, or using different electrode
classifications. The classification system is illustrated in Figure 1, and
explained in Clause A1.2 of Appendix A.
1.5
The values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. The inch/pound
(imperial) equivalents in parentheses are for information only. In case of
dispute, metric values shall take precedence.
