CAN/CSA-E79-11-95
1 Scope
1.1 This part of IEC 79 prescribes the specific requirements for the design,
construction, testing, and marking of electrical apparatus and electrical
systems with type of protection "i". It also contains requirements for
associated apparatus that is not protected for use within an explosive gas
atmosphere but contains both intrinsically-safe circuits and
non-intrinsically-safe circuits that can affect the safety of
instrinsically-safe circuits.
Note - The "electrical apparatus" or "electrical system" will be
defined by the manufacturer or other party making the claim of
compliance with this standard.
1.2 These specific requirements are additional to the following general
requirements in IEC 79-0.

Note: Intrinsically-safe apparatus and systems, and intrinsically-safe portions
of associated apparatus, of Category "ib" are permitted in IEC Zone 1 and Zone
2 areas, but not Zone 0 areas. Division 1 of the Canadian Electrical Code,
Part I encompasses both IEC Zone 0 and 1 areas; therefore equipment evaluated
and tested to Category "ib" is not acceptable for Division 1.
