1. Purpose The purpose of this standard is to describe the minimum performance requirements for protective garments designed to protect fire fighters against adverse environmental effects during structural fire fighting. It also specifies the test methods for determining compliance with the minimum performance requirements set forth in this standard. 2. Scope This standard is not intended to be utilized as a detailed manufacturing or purchase specification. It can however be referenced in purchase specifications as a means to express minimum performance levels required. This standard does not apply to specialized protective clothing for aircraft rescue and fire fighting, hazardous materials emergencies, or wildland fire fighting. It does not provide criteria for proximity, approach, or entry clothing or criteria for protection from chemical, radiological, or biological agents. Nothing herein prevents neither a manufacturer from offering a product beyond those minimum requirements, nor a purchaser from requiring such going beyond.
