Steel Structures
1.1 Scope This Standard provides rules and requirements for the design and fabrication of steel fixed offshore structures where the design is based on limit states. 1.2 Application 1.2.1 This Standard applies unconditionally to steel and steel/concrete composite fixed offshore structures. Supplementary rules or requirements may be necessary for unusual types of construction. The resistances of the nontubular members of the topside facilities structures and main deck shall conform to the requirements of CSA Standard CAN/CSA-S16.1. 1.2.2 An alternative rational design method based on theory, analysis, and recognized engineering practice may be used in lieu of the design process and formulae provided in this Standard. In such cases, the design shall provide levels of safety and performance at least equal to those implied by this Standard and CSa Standard CAN/CSA-S471. 1.2.3 Special systems of design or construction of structural elements not covered by this Standard may be used where such systems are based on generally accepted analytical and engineering principles and, where necessary, reliable test data. In such cases, the design shall provide levels of safety and performance at least equal to those required by this Standard and CSA Standard CAN/CSA-S471. 1.2.4 Steels of higher strength than those covered by this Standard may be used where it can be documented that they have adequate weldability and toughness so that the fracture resistance of the steel and its weldments provide levels of fracture control at least equivalent to those provided by Clause 6.
