1. Introduction This document provides a protocol specification for Interlibrary Loan (ILL) communication. The purpose of the ILL protocol is to allow the parties involved in an ILL transaction to progress through the transaction in an orderly and prescribed way. The ILL protocol is defined as being within the Application Layer (Layer 7) of the OSI Reference Model (CAN/CSA-Z243.100-86). The ILL protocol has been designed to support the ILL services defined within the ILL Service Definition (Z243.45-88). The specification technique used is consistent with techniques used in defining other OSI protocols. Within most of this document, the technique is self-explanatory. The abstract syntax of the ILl application-protocol-data-units (APDU) is defined by means of the ASN.1 specification technique (ISO IS 8824-1987).
