Graphical Electrical Symbols for Architectural Plans
1. Scope 1.1 The symbols contained in this Standard are intended for those who prepare or use electrical wiring and layout diagrams associated with architecture and building construction. These symbols have purposely been made simple and are not intended in any way to depict the structure of the particular devices shown. 1.2 It is not the intention of this Standard to determine the size of the particular symbols used on a drawing. They shall be drawn to a size commensurate with the particular drawing being made. The size of wire or conduit is not to be designated or implied by the symbol, although the following factors are so intended: (a) Number of wires in a conduit; (b) use (branch circuit, feeder, auxiliary system); and (c) Location (ceiling, floor). Wire and conduit sizes shall be as designated in CSA Standard C22.1, Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, and shall be marked on the drawings. 1.3 The symbols may be modified by upper-case letters and other distinguishing marks placed in the centre and by subscript letters or numbers placed at the lower right. Upper-case letters used as subscripts shall refer to standard types. Numerals shall refer to standard numerical variations. Lower-case letters used as subscripts shall have a meaning varying with each drawing or set of drawings and shall be explained in a key symbols accompanying the drawings. 1.4 Examples of special outlets and switches, designated by upper-case letter identification beside the symbol, are: (a) Dust-tight - DT; (b) Explosion-proof - EP; (c) Rain-tight - RT; (d) Vapour-tight - VT; (e) Weatherproof - WP; (f) Recessed - R; (g) Undergrounded - UNG. 1.5 Drawings prepared using symbols from this Standard are intended to show the physical location of the outlets and devices required, as well as the location of the required wiring. Supplementary notes are to be used where necessary. For clarity, separate drawing sheets may be used for different systems in the same location, e.g., signal systems and lighting systems may be shown separately.
