Champ d’application

1.1
This Standard specifies material, design, and construction requirements for manufactured grease interceptors intended to separate and collect organic fats, oils, and greases from water.

1.2
Grease interceptors covered in the CSA B481 Series

  1. are installed in drainage systems to reduce the amount of organic fats, oils, and greases entering the sanitary system;
  2. may be for indoor applications (usually referred to as the under-the-counter type) or for outdoor applications (i.e., underground);
  3. have a flow rating of not less than 26 L/min (7 gpm) and not more than 380 L/min (100 gpm); and
    Note: Grease interceptors can operate at any flow rate below their flow rating.
  4. are hydromechanical batch-flow interceptors.

1.3
The CSA B481 Series does not cover interceptors intended for rainwater, sanitary wastewater, or wastewater containing petroleum products such as gasoline, heating oils, or mineral oils.

1.4
In CSA Standards, "shall" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; "should" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; "may" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard; and "can" is used to express possibility or capability.

Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material.

Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements.

Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.

1.5
In the CSA B481 Series, the values given in SI (metric) units are the standard. Where values are given in parentheses, they are for information only.

Litres (metric liquid) per minute is abbreviated L/min and gallons (US liquid) per minute is abbreviated gpm. All references to gallons are to US liquid gallons.
