This standard provides a consistent, step-by-step methodology for conducting natural asset inventories with considerations for:

  • Building a common understanding of natural asset management, and where inventories fit within the process
  • Conducting a readiness assessment
  • Completing a competency review to assess the core required competencies and identify gaps
  • Scoping to identify the services of interest to a community and the data that is readily available to inform the assessment
  • Data gathering and processing
  • Inventory development, including a consideration of the asset type and location, the services provided and the ownership of the natural asset,
  • Condition assessment determining how well a natural asset is performing as intended,
  • Risk identification based on the asset’s condition and possible threats and opportunities
  • Natural asset prioritization considering a local community’s context, risks, interests and priorities
  • Early indication of actions or analysis relating to (a) maintaining an inventory (b) proceeding to a full natural asset management project

Raison d’être du projet

To support widespread natural asset management practices across Canada by providing a consistent set of requirements and recommendations for the development of natural asset inventories that are comparable replicable and effective, in order to help local governments better understand what services natural assets provide. This proposed New Standard is being developed at the request of Municipal Natural Assets Initiative (MNAI). It will provide the industry with requirements and guidance on how to complete natural asset inventories to enable practitioners and consultants to conduct such assessments in a consistent manner.
