This Standard specifies requirements pertaining to the quality and uniformity of softwood lumber manufactured in Canada and establishes the designation “Canadian Standard Lumber” for lumber that meets the requirements of this Standard. This Standard covers the following topics: 

(a) classification; 
(b) measurement; 
(c) standard sizes; 
(d) grading rules; 
(e) identification (grade stamps and certificates); and 
(f) accreditation board and grading agency responsibilities. 

This Standard also includes detailed Annexes covering lumber terminology and lumber industry 
abbreviations. This Standard does not cover trade practices, grades (other than grading rules and 
identification), the details of accreditation board and grading agency inspection procedures, or strength values. 

Raison d’être du projet

To maintain alignment with international requirements and to update the current standard due to user experience/feedback/new technology. This proposed New Edition is being developed at the request of the technical committee on Solid and Engineering Wood Products, the Canadian Wood Council, and stakeholders in the construction industry using wood as a building material. It will provide the industry with an updated adoption of the standard PS 20 with Canadian deviations to support the local manufacturing and construction.
